Practical Lessons for DITA Implementation

Eric Severson (Flatirons Solutions)
XML Documents and Publishing Arlington
Chair: Lisa Bos (Really Strategies)

In the last year, DITA has literally taken the world by storm. Having quickly become the standard of choice for technical publishing, it is now being taken very seriously in a number of other application areas. But implementing and using DITA is not always strightforward.

Based on real-life experience with DITA implementations, this presentation reviews key lessons learned and provides a wealth of practical advice for those considering DITA. Through specific case studies, we’ll cover all of the following key issues:

• How DITA is both similar to and different from DocBook and other XML publishing models.

• What authors need to consider in moving toward DITA.

• How to handle topic-based rather than book-based review cycles.

• Successfully migrating existing content to DITA.

• Content management best practices for DITA topics and maps.

• How DITA can support “dynamic content delivery” – real-time publishing of highly-tailored documents to an “audience of one”.
