Lightning Rounds for XML standards
The call for proposals is now open. Please visit http://2007.xmlconference.org/public/cfp/6 to enter your proposal for a talk on any public standard or widely-implemented specification related to structured markup.
Lightning rounds are a series of short, fast-paced presentations on related topics. The rules are simple:
- Each presentation is allowed exactly 20 slides.
- Each slide is displayed for exactly 20 seconds.
- We change the slides.
As a result, each presentation lasts for exactly six minutes and forty seconds. Applause and (polite) heckling are encouraged, and the evening will be energetic, informative, and fun. The audience is welcome to come and go throughout the evening.
Presentations
(In alphabetical order. Actual speaking order will be determined on Tuesday night before the talks begin.)
- DITA specialization and RSuite CMS
DITA specialization is not something you can contain. It is something that tools either support or they don't. RSuite CMS supports DITA specialization.
- ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 34 Document description and processing languages
This is the joint ISO/IEC committee responsible for the SGML family of standards, and the XML-related standards being shepherded by ISO. The presentation is delivered by the Secretariat Manager.
- Lightning talk on W3C EXI standard
This lightning talk will focus on the W3C Efficient XML Interchange >draft recommendation. This describes a standard for the compression >of XML markup.
- OASIS genericode - code lists and metadata in XML
Genericode is the XML format being produced by the OASIS Code List Representation TC as a distribution format for code lists and related metadata. Genericode was first proposed at XML 2004.
- RDF Access to Relational Data - Workshop Report
In mid-October, a W3C Workshop considered (will consider) RDF Access to Relational Data. The report on that Workshop will interest Semantic Web proponents as well as relational database users.
- Technology and Industry Convergence - OAGIS Business Network Standards
The UN/CEFACT Core Components based OAGIS standard's convergence efforts have succeeded in bringing many groups to work towards fewer standards. Come see what is happening.
- The 5 minute guide to RDFa...in only 6 minutes and 40 seconds
RDFa is a generic way to add metadata to mark-up, and has been described by Bob du Charme as ‘microformats done right’. This talk aims to get you up to speed on this new W3C standard…fast.

- The new Metadata Model of OpenDocument Format 1.2
The OASIS OpenDocument Format 1.2 will introduce a new RDF based metadata framework, which leverages all the work done for the Semantic Web onto ODF applications and documents.
- The OASIS Universal Business Language (UBL)
OASIS UBL 2.0 is the global standard for electronic business messages (purchase orders, invoices, etc.). This lightning round provides a quick overview of current developments.
- Using CSS to print XML
CSS can be used to style XML documents, and CSS3 adds new printing features. This lightning round covers printing XML with CSS.
- What comes after Web 2.0?
Web 2.0 is evolving toward a smarter Web, based on leveraging data/metadata/links and applying intelligence to tasks. This session covers the technologies and standards driving these efforts.
- xModify: a Declarative Mechanism Designed to Modify UIs Using a Syntax
